Course content
1. General theory of image narration. 2. Comics as a medium. 3. Cross-section of the history of comics until the end of the 19th century. 4. American comics of the first half of the 20th century. 5. Francophone comics of the first half of the 20th century. 6. American comics of the second half of the 20th century. 7. Francophone comics of the 20th half of the 20th century. 8. Alan Moore, Frank Miller, Neil Gaiman, Garth Enis. 9. American Underground from 70 years. 20th century after RAW magazine. 10. Contemporary independent creators of American comics. 11. Contemporary independent creators of European comics. 12. Cross section of Czech comics. 13. Contemporary Czech comic book authors. The subject History of Comics focuses on the history of pictorial narration from a creative point of view. The course is intended primarily for comic book creators, discusses historical approaches to the creation of comics and acquaints students with current authors and current trends. The course deals with the general theory of comics, basic terminology, the theory of pictorial narration and narrative illustration, and through the analysis of individual authors then examines more complex topics (eg the aesthetics of the postmodern script). Emphasis is placed on the history of comics from the second half of the 20th century to contemporary authors.
