Course content
Weeks 1 - 13 I. Introduction to study of multimedia. What may the concept of "multimedia" represent? What area of art does it cover? Which artist is a multimedia artist and which not? New media: we know what they are - a few remarks on new media in the book New Media: A critical introduction / Martin Lister, Jon Dovey, Seth Giddings, Iain Grant, Kieran Kelly/. II. Share of the eye: vision and perception in Neurophysiology, what we see, time factor in perception. / Based on the book: Image - Jacques Aumont. III. From eye to eyesight: perception of space and movement; perception of visual images; observer. / Based on the book: Image - Jacques Aumont. Dispositif / vision in context/. IV. Picture - frame and frame size, detail. Time in the picture. Image and video. Models of perception. Development of moving images. V. Video I. Establishment of video art and television, the first form of work with video in the context of performance art / performances, events, happenings, installations, body art, timed sculpture. VI. Video II. Video art as part of new media, different ways of artistic expression through video / movie as a kind of poetry, "movie" video, video installation, video sculpture and video as a recording of events, VII. Guest - Mgr. Martin Mazanec: Introduction to Film Studies, beginnings of filmmaking, definition of film genres, special cases of filmmaking. VIII. Guest - Mgr. Pavlina Micova. Art of moving images.The lecture presents works of moving images by contemporary Czech and Slovak artists. We will present and analyze videos by selected major artists from the fields of new media and animation art at art colleges (Academy of Fine Arts, Faculty of Fine Arts, FAMU, VSUP and others). Students will, based on an initial excursion into the historical problem of video art, get acquainted with current trends (thematic and technological). An integral part of the lecture will be a presentation of a large number of videos and performances by particular creative personalities. IX. Virtual reality in the 20th century. Artistic, military and industrial context. 3D cinema, Head Mounted Displays, telepresence, CAVE. Application of technology in the 2nd half of the 20th century art. / Based on book Virtual Art, From Illusion to Immersion - Oliver Grau / X. Illusions and conditions for their formation. A brief overview of the history of immersive image from the year 60 BC to the 17th century, Panorama and the power of suggestion, stereoscopic imaging. / Based on book Virtual Art, From Illusion to Immersion - Oliver Grau/ XI. Guest - MgA Frantisek Zachoval. Open Source in the context of art and culture in Central and Eastern Europe. Lecture monitors the implementation of open source philosophy to the arts and culture in Central and Eastern Europe after 2000. In the last decade many academic and artistic programs and departments have devoted themselves to new media in order to use some open source technologies in teaching, specializing in performances and exhibitions. Broad principles of open source parallelly penetrate various disciplines: economics, sociology and philosophy. Open source experiences a diametric development in culture and art, which, in its beginnings, occurred sporadically and now, in the neo-media disciplines, it becomes a fundamental building block and particularly a set of models which have become very inspiring for the creative process. XII. Science and Arts. Examples of artists working in the field of microbiology, nanotechnology, kinetics, genetics, - / based on book Information Art - Stephen Wilson XIII. Internet. History of "network", examples of artists working for the Network and its users, Internet art categories - hacking, rendering algorithms, social projects, voyeurism, webcam. + Credit test.
