Course content
1. Introduction. 2. Conditions for the emergence of design in the 19th century. 3. Period of about 1880-1914 and the beginnings of industrial design. 4. - 5. Design and "Classical" inter-war avant-garde (about the period 1918-1933 ). 6. - 7. Design and vehicles 1918-1933 (about 1918 to 1933). 8. Design in the U.S. in the inter-war period. 9. - 10. Period 1933-1939. Developing design as a separate discipline. 11. Developments in the inter-war Czechoslovakia (1918-1939). 12. Field trip. 13. Summary of design development from 19th century to 1939.

  • Contact hours - 52 hours per semester
  • Attendance on a field trip (number of real hours - maximum 8h/day) - 8 hours per semester

Basic knowledge of general history at the level of general secondary education.
to provide basic knowledge of technical and technological procedures in designers practical work, to compare and analyze different artistic expressions by criteria of esthetics, semiotics and technique on basic level, to specify basic knowledge of supporting arts disciplines, to describe fundamental artistic and style canons of evolution of visual and applied art,

to work systematically on either seminar work or own learning, to show interest in learning of theory of problematics usable in own practical work, to use basic expresive means and options of design and its forms, to work independently and activelly and flexibly react to evaluating commentary of the teacher,

assumptions of origins of design, factical creation since its beginning, interwar avantgarde in Europe, USA and Czechoslovakia to the beginning of WWII, for naming main personalities in the field and describe their products, of the role of designer in the process of a product, of examples, shed light on the historical development of design in various technical fields,

to identify the shape, material and technological characteristics of products in different periods of design development, to chronologically classify industrial products (technical objects) according to shape, or technical solutions and materials used, to assign, to each period or creative fields, the specialisations which developed most fruitfully, to evaluate influence of technical development on evolution of industrial design,
