Course content
The concept of the course is based on the idea of the equal importance of the development of art in the second half of the 20th century and the development of contemporary philosophy and social events. It will therefore not be a historical linear survey of the most significant artists and phenomena of world art, but rather a search for the genealogy of modern and contemporary art against the background of social changes and transformations in theoretical debates and conceptions of the world. List of topics and literature 1. The situation after the war - the bipolar division of the world into East and West - the split between two global dispositions - Post-war art movements: Tashism, Informel, Abstract Expressionism, COBRA, The Independent Group and socialist realism. - Reflections of ideologies in art: socialism, liberalism, conservatism 2. The situation in the 1960s - Pop art, new realism, fluxus, conceptual art - Formalism and structuralism - Roland Barthes - Mythology 3. Situation in the 1960s 2 - Conceptualism, minimalism, land art, body art, arte povera, happening - Peter Bürger - Theory of the avant-garde 4. Postmodernism - the split of postmodernism in Europe and the USA - New Expressionism, Pictures Generation, appropriation vs. critical postmodernism and deconstruction 5. Art and institutional critique from the 1960s to the present - Institutional and ideological frameworks of cultural operation 6. The female gaze - Laura Mulvey, Judith Butler - Feminism in art from the second half of the 20th century to the present 7. Postcolonialism and Identity Politics in Art - Edward Said - Documenta 11: The assertion of postcolonial discourse in contemporary art - Culture Wars 8. Documentary turn, archival turn - participatory art, post-production 9. Technooptimism - reflection on new media from Lev Manovich to Hito Steyerl - Accelerationism, Transhumanism - postinternet art - artificial intelligence - Donna Haraway 10. New materialism, bioart, ecological art - Jane Bennett 11. Specifics of Czech art in the 2nd half of the 20th century. 12. Excursion Veletržní palác ad.
