Course content
Lexicology - its characteristics, disciplines and relationship between lexicology and lexicography. Semasiology and onomasiology. The term of a word and its definition. Lexicon and its elements. Definition of a lexical meaning; the term of the meaning of the word and its components. Metasemy from synchronic and diachronic points of view. Relationship between lexical units in the lexicon. Stratification in a national language and strata in the lexicon. Contemporary development trends in the lexicon. Word-formation and its basic terminology - motivation, foundation, productiveness. Onomaziological word structure. Word-forming methods and processes. Word-forming type and category. Morphemic word structure. Contemporary development trends in word-formation. Lexicography - description of the lexicon in dictionaries. Sorts and types of dictionaries and the most important dictionaries in the 19th and 20th centuries. Lexicological, word-forming and morphemic analysis and their basis and differences.

explain a function of the word as a complete lexical unit in a text
specify the lexical system of the language and its disciplines and elements
describe the difference between a word and lexeme
demonstrate understanding of paradigmatic and syntagmatic relationships in the lexical system of the language
describe the basic principles of lexicological work from scientific point of view
categorize the sorts and types of dictionaries
explain the principles of description of the word-forming system
describe word-formation processes, manners and processes of new lexical units creation
distinguish three types of word analysis: morphemic, morphoplogical and word-formation

interpret a text from lexical point of view
choose lexical phenomena from a text and characterize them in detail
analyze a word from the word-forming, morphemic and morphological point of view
interpret differences between individual types of analysis
recommend appropriate words to word-forming analysis
choose the suitable dictionary as a source of information regarding lexeme
