The Toledo school of translators is pehnomen which took place in the city of Toledo between 12th and 13th century. Toledo was well known for its intellectual richness during the moors rule. After the conquest of the city by the king Alfonso VI., and after the coming of the clergy of cluny in early 12th century there was a strong need for a latin translations of the antic authors preserved in Arabic language. Many scholars believe that the clunic archbishop Raymond of Toledo was a founder of the group of translators who work under the church. This work confronts this theory with the new studies and tries to find out more about the real church´s involvement in the translation process. The main part of the thesis focuses on the translators who worked in the Toledo a divide them into the 3 groups. The first "The early translate effort" describes the translations between the years 1130-1220 and focuses on the main translators of that time: John of Seville, Gerrard of Cremona, Dominicus Gundissalinus and mythical "Avendehut" The next part is called "The transition period". It was believed that during the 1220-1270 there was a strong translating tradition and later Alfonso X. found the group of scholar, but new research, especially from pen of the historians Charles Burnnet and Marie Thérese d´Averny, we know believe, that only scholar who worked in this time in Toledo was Germannus Alemannus when the main part of scholars left Toledo and settled in Europe, especially in Paris. The last chapter of this thesis is about effort of Alfonso X. to revive the translating activity and founding the real "school", the team of translators who worked under his command and who translated the works into new kastilian language along with French and latine translations as well.
