Úvodní kapitola stručně pojednává o geografii a demografii Etiopie. O rok později Britové smlouvu porušili a předali strategicky důležitý přístav Massawa do rukou Italů. Tento krok předznamenal počátek první italskoetiopské války (18951896) a konec přátelství s Etiopií.
Přelom století je spojen s postavou císaře Menelika II. (18891913). Drtivá porážka italské koloniální armády u Adwy vyvolala v Evropě šok a přinesla etiopskému císaři značnou prestiž a respekt.

The topic of this diploma thesis is the British interests in Ethiopia in the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Although it is a relatively long period, emphasis is placed mainly on the engagement of Great Britain during its course.
The work is chronologically divided into four chapters. Geography and demography of the country are briefly introduced in the first chapter. Then it is outlined the historical evolution of the country from the legendary journey of the Queen of Sheba to Jerusalem during the reign of King Solomon until the period of division of Africa at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Particular attention is paid to the first contacts between Ethiopia and Great Britain. Great Britain initially had primarily business interests in Africa, only later decided to enter the region diplomatically. The colonial rivalry with France, the question of controlling the Nile basin and its tributaries and, in part, the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, played a major role in this.
The thesis also discusses the government of Emperor Tewodros II. (1855-1868) and the dispute he had with Great Britain. An innocent diplomatic rupture escalated into a military intervention by the British Indian Army under the command of Sir Robert Napier. The unfortunate fate of Tewodros became a legend in Ethiopian history and the emperor is still perceived as a martyr.
The British superior and overlooked view of Ethiopia has completely changed under the reign of Emperor Yohannes IV (1872-1889). Yohannes took over Ethiopia on the verge of a civil war and a foreign invasive army present in the very heart of the country. Yohannes also inherited trust and admiration for the mighty Albion, and during his reign he often turned to him for advice or help. Great Britain, however, did not intend to establish closer relations with Ethiopia; its position changed due to a mahdi rebellion in 1881. For the rescue of British and Egyptian soldiers from the territory of Sudan, the British Government was now forced to seek help. The outcome of the peace mission negotiations in 1884 was the conclusion of the Hewett Treaty. Yohannes fulfilled his obligations and assumed that Great Britain would honor her with the same fervor as he did. Disappointment arose a year later when Great Britain handed the strategically important port of Massawa to the hands of the Italians.
The turn of the century is associated with the Emperor Menelik II. During his reign, among other things, regular diplomatic relations with world powers have been established. In the decade after the Battle of Adwa (1896), the boundaries of Ethiopia with neighboring protectorates of Great Britain, France and Italy were determined, as well as the establishment of embassies in the capital Addis Ababa. The interests of the European Powers on the future of the country were enshrined in the Tripartite Treaty, concluded in 1906. In it, the powers with the greatest interests in Ethiopia, i.e. Great Britain, France and Italy, defined their spheres of influence and agreed on a common approach in the event of the collapse of the unity of the country. Implementation of the treaty was prevented by the outbreak of the First World War, which began only a few months after the death of Emperor Menelik in December 1913.
