Course content
Niccoló Machiavelli: The Prince; the beginnings of modern political thought Thomas Hobbes: Leviathan; autority, equality and social order John Locke: Two Treatises on Government; freedom, property and right to dissent Charles Louis Montesquieu: The Spirit of the Laws; division of powers Adam Smith: The Wealth of Nations; freedom, trade and the invisible hand Karl Marx: The German Ideology; materialist analysis of social relations and ideology Karl Marx: Capital; alienation, classes and exploitation Max Weber: Economy and Society; power and legitimacy Max Weber: Economy and Society; rationalization, alienation and social classes Summary: development of modern social thought cratic regimes.
