Course content
|
The connection between philosophy, aesthetics and aesthetics of music. Specifics of musical reception. Specifics of music in comparison to other kinds of art; means of expression and their changes in music history. Topics: Problems of perception and interpretation of music. Specifics of music in comparison to other kinds of art. Means of expression in music: rhythm, melody, harmony and orchestration as a realization of the basic properties of musical sounds (height, length, thickness, colour); identity and contrast; structure of musical expression as a result of direct and relational ideas. Changes of expressions in history, fundamental musical concepts. The relation of aesthetic of music and changes of art of music in history (philosophical views on music in ancient times Pythagoras, Plato, Aristotle; approach to music in the Middle Ages (music as a part of the quadrivium) Augustin Aurelius; music in Renaissance Camerata; music in baroque Monteverdi, Gluck, theory of affects, opera; the change of music language in classicism orchestra, interpreter; music in romanticism new musical forms, new orchestrations, Wagner's reform of opera; the change of music aits means of expressions in modern musical trends; impressionism, music of the 20th century, present-day music.

| Passing the course leads to obtaining basic insight into the problems of the history and characteristics of musical art in the context of European philosophy, aesthetics and fine arts. Student is able: to distinguish basic general features of particular art styles with the emphasis on summarizing specific musical means of expression dominant in each period; to outline particular periods of music history in the relation to cultural and social development; to compare and describe movements in characteristics of music as the consequence of historical changes. |
