Course content
Content: 1) Greek concept of techné: between handcraft and creation. 2) Ancient concept of poetry, relation of poetry to rules. 3) The concept of art in archaic poets, Pre-Socratic philosophers and Socrates. 4) The concept of art in Plato and Aristotle, the relation of art and philosophy. 5) Hellenistic concept of art; considerations on art in the milieu of philosophical schools. 6) Latin concept of art; art in the context of Roman philosophy; Cicero's considerations on art. 7) The concept of liberal arts, the trivium and the quadrivium; emergence of universities; mechanical art 8) Renaissance studia humanitatis; the reception of ancient inspirations. 9) Renaissance defences of poetry; relations among various arts; the concept of divine madness of poet. 10) French Academies of the 17th century; rise of prestige of artistic disciplines cultivated in Academies. 11) The emergence of concept Ut pictura poesis; comparisons of capabilities of painting and poetry. 12) The emergence of the concept of fine arts; fine arts, liberal arts and arts of drawing. 13) The importance of establishment of sciences for the delimitation of specific nature of artistic disciplines.

learning outcomes
The course will enable students to describe the history of understanding of what art is. Students will acquire knowledge of this development in the period from Antiquity to the beginning of 18th century. Students will understand particular theories of art; they will be able to explain the relations of these theories to the intellectual, social and cultural context of the period. They will be also able to analyse and compare theories of art on the basis of lecture of primary and secondary literature. Owing to the course, students will be also able to formulate presuppositions and consequences of various opinions on art and theories of art, which emerged in the period, and evaluate the meaning of these opinions and theories in the context of the European culture.
