Course content

Introduction: historical overview of monument care and heritage preservation, the main personalities and basic theoretical and philosophical approaches. Historical value/Values of cultural heritage: the development and transformations of the concept of heritage values. The work of art as a monument: the value of artwork as a cultural artifact, the works of art in the context of preservation of cultural heritage The concept of Originality in art theory and monument care from the early modern period to the recent times. Development of concepts of authenticity, originality, original, copy etc. Nara document on authenticity and its current revision. Architectural heritage, architectural reconstruction and the transformation of the concepts of preservation of the works of architecture in the monument care Torso and fragment in art, patina. Ageing and damaging of monuments Selected aspects of contemporary cultural heritage management: reversibility and intangible heritage
