Course content
The course consists of these items: Attributes of a state, power and sovereignty of a state, nation and state. Territorial organization of a modern state. Parts of state territory. Political geography of seas and oceans: exclusive economic zone, disputed areas. Ship transport - threats and opportunities. State population from the political geography point of view. Nations and states, processes of formation and decline of nations. Models of nations and its developmental trends (European and American model, Asian, African model). Forms of a state and their modifications. Specific territories. Selected border disputes. Dependent territories. Political map of the world - in the 20th century, historical and contemporary. Political and economic division of the world, types of states according to various criteria. Integrative and disintegrative processes in the world. The main geopolitical guidelines. The specifics of cultural macro-regions of the world. Typology of wars and armed conflicts. Motivations for war, origins of warfare - theories. United Nations and its monitoring of international safety. Multi-scalar polarization and fragmentation in political geography.
