The course is intended for doctoral studies of archeology.It concentrates on the significance of artefacts for the formation and continuation of human society mainly on the community level.The settlement area theory leads to the discussion of the importance of the archaeological record for the understanding of the relationships within prehistoric communities and among them (specialization, assistence opposed to exchange, ritual warring). The opposition between community and supracommunity leves is discussed.
