The objective of the course is to introduce students to the basic socio-cultural characteristics of Britain and the United States. By combining knowledge of history and contemporary development in both countries, the students acquire critical understanding of the specifics of life in the Anglo-American world, from social stratification and the lifestyle of individual social classes to key institutions such as the monarchy, government, parliament, education system or media. Attention is paid to a series of recent socio-economic issues (the character of British and American economy, conditions on the labour market, access to housing, generational differentiation). The course makes ample use of authentic material such as newspaper articles, reports and a wide range of video material. An integral part of the course is the comparison of both countries and emphasis on their special features in contrast to other developed countries. |
