Welcome
The 21st century is characterised by a daily flood of information that is far from easy to navigate, let alone to derive knowledge from it (e.g. repeatability, trends, deviations from the norm) needed for decision-making. Visualisation is a way of conveying this information, or the knowledge derived from it, clearly and effectively. For the human brain, it is easier to understand an image than a long text or a set of numbers. After all, most of us know the saying that "a picture is worth a thousand words". The key question, however, is which form of visualisation to choose.
As part of the course, we will focus on the most commonly used visualisation techniques and explain and demonstrate how to communicate information effectively through visualisation so that it is unambiguous and does not allow for unwanted misinterpretation. We will also look at current trends in the field of information visualisation. In addition to the theoretical foundations, students will have the opportunity to design their own visual representation of larger datasets, using Microsoft Power BI or Tableau Public.
