Course objectives:
|
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the general history of the Middle Ages. Its content is bounded with years 476 - 1555 with natural overlaps in both directions. Locally it is focused on the history of Europe. Parallel aim of the course is to inform about the basic sources and literature connected with given topics.

1. Downfall of the late antique society and migration period, rise of the first barbaric states
2. Frankish empire - development till the half of the 9th century
3. Ottonian and Salian empire - development till the beginning of Gregorian reformation
4. Early medieval France and accession of Capetian dynasty
5. Byzantine Empire till the beginning of crusades
6. Investiture Controversy and beginning of the emancipation of the catholic church
7. Beginnings of the Polish and Hungarian state, Kievan Rus
8. Crusades
9. Anglo - french relations - from the accession of the House of Plantagenet till the end of the Hundred Years' War
10. Develompent of the Roman empire during the reign of the House of Hohenstaufen and the House of Luxembourg
11. Eastern Europe 1200 - 1500 - Byzantine Empire, Russia, Balkans
