Course objectives:
The aim of this course is to introduce the foreign and security policies of the European Union and relate them to foreign and security policies of EU member states. The structure of the course draws from the concept of Europeanization of public policies, the possibilities and limits of which will be discussed in the initial lectures. Consequently, the course will shift its attention to the process of development, goals and practice of common foreign and security policy and defence policy in the EU. The second part of the course will discuss foreign and security policies of European Union member states, stressing the role of the process of European integration in their formation, and preparing the ground for a final analysis of foreign and security policies of EU member states with regard to European integration.
Requirements on student
The course will conclude with a final combined (oral and written) examination focusing on the ability of the student to discuss assigned readings as well as the issues presented in lectures. Students have to complete all of their reading assignments and prepare all of the tasks assigned by the lecturer. These tasks may have the form of oral presentations or papers, and their topics will concentrate on matters of conceptualization of foreign and security policies of the EU and its member states. During seminars, students will analyze strategic public foreign or security policy documents of EU member states. By the first day of the semester, a detailed syllabus of the course specifying the requirements and content of the course will be available on Courseware.
