Course objectives:
|
Course is taught in English only. The course tends to examine conflict situations, wars, and seeds of tensions in Sub-Saharan Africa, mainly in the period of African independence since the 1960s until nowadays. Students will be informed about various causes and consequences of many different crises in modern and contemporary history of Africa. Conflicts in Sierra Leone and Liberia, Congo, Mali and Niger, Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan, or Nigeria will be analyzed. Both internal and external factors which influence or minimize conflicts in Africa will be discussed as well.

Requirements on student
|
Students will work individually with scientific literature, they will participate in lectures and seminars by discussions and analyses of relevant texts. Students will prepare a seminar paper on a chosen topic and prepare a paper for oral presentation on seminars.

Knowledge - knowledge resulting from the course: |
Students will gain knowledge of causes, consequences and effects of various conflicts in Africa. Based on a sufficient amount of available materials, students will be able to analyze complex and complicated situations and factors that contribute to the spread of conflicts in Africa including economic, ethnic, political, social, environmental, international, or religious factors. |
