Course objectives:
|
The aim of the lecture course is to introduce students to the historical development of the Czech and Czech-German (Sudeten-German) ethnography. Special emphasis will be placed on the relationship between the two provincial linguistic traditions of the field, as well as the way of interpreting the Czech-German relations in the ethnological production of the period. The interpretation also takes into account issues of the wide social importance of ethnography as a "national science". In terms of the Central European context, besides this, the particularities of ethnological research carried out in the Czech countries will be covered. The postwar development of the Czech marxist ethnography will also be taken into account as well as the current development of the discipline over the last twenty years.
