The topic of this diploma thesis is Indonesia as a new (emerging) power. The aim of this work is to assess to what extent Indonesia, through its activities, especially in foreign policy, fulfills the characteristics of a new power and why it is not seen as a typical representative of new powers within the discourse, i.e. it is not associated with the prominent new powers of the BRICS. The theoretical part introduces the concept of new power. At the end of this chapter the 7 defining features of a new power are stated. The first chapter of the empirical part focuses on Indonesian foreign policy activities since the proclamation of independence in 1945 to 1998, as Indonesia's power ambitions can already be observed within this time period. Then, the 7 defining features are used in the main, analytical, part of this thesis to analyze Indonesia. The last chapter deals with the reasons why Indonesia is not part of BRICS.
