This bachelor thesis examines the British influence and interests in the Arabian Peninsula between 1945 and 1990. The region has always been, because of its strategic position and natural richness, the subject of many cleavages and disputes. First of all, the paper deals with reasons and interests of the British empire which have drawn their attention to this region before 1945. Comprised are also internal and external problems, which Britain had to face during fortifying its position and also the way of establishing and maintaining its influence.
The new position of the United Kingdom in the world after the Second World War and domestic economic issues had an impact on the British foreign policy. The new situation fundamentally influenced the British foreign policy and its interests towards the Middle East, especially after the loss of colonies in India. Whilst the United Kingdom was changing its attitude, a new threat to the British position in the form of Imamate uprising in Oman has arisen. However, after dealing with the troubles in Oman, the growing Arabian nationalism and discontent in the protectorate in South Yemen became an impetus for the process of the British withdrawal from the Arabian Peninsula.
The process of withdrawing from Aden and South Yemen was chaotic and gory, which left the country in the conduct of Marxist regime. The contrary was the process of a peaceful withdrawing from the Gulf, which paved a way for
a future cooperation. In addition, the United Kingdom also had to deal with the Dhofar rebellion in Oman which was crucial to stop the spread of Marxism in the Arabian Peninsula. Even though the United Kingdom withdrew in 1971 and their influence has rapidly diminished, the interests stayed. However, the foreign policy towards this region once again had to change.
During 1971 until 1990, the United Kingdom has mainly concentrated on the oil and weapon trade with the new Gulf states and also on the sustainability of the security in the region. The United States, as a new rising hegemony in the Gulf, became very important for providing security in the region. After the year 1990, the strengths of the United Kingdom were weakening and was slowly vanishing from the region. However, with the start of the new millennia, Britain again started to cooperate with the states in the Gulf and as we can see today, the United Kingdom is mostly rediscovering its role in the Gulf once again.
