Course objectives:

The aim of this lecture is to present and evaluate the fundamental problems of development in the Far East in the 19th century (until 1914) with special emphasis on the history of China and Japan respectively politics of Great Powers in this area.

The causes, course and consequences of the Sino-Japanese War 1894/95.
Struggle of the Great Powers for concessions and spheres of influence.
Boxer Rebellion.
The doctrine of "open doors" and the question of the integrity of China.
Russo-Japanese War 1904-1905.
China on its way from Empire to Republic.
Developments in China after the establishment of the Republic.
