Course objectives:
|
The aim of this course is to make students familiar with fossilization process, and evolutionary history of plants and animals in the geological history.
|
Requirements on student
|
The student must demonstrate knowledge of particular plant and animal fossils, and accomplish the credit test.

Content
|
1) Methods of study of fosils, origin and preservation fossils.
2) Taphonomy. Significant palaeontological localities in territory of the Czech Republic and in the world.
3) Origin of life.
4) Evolution of life in the Precambrian (origin of plancton, benthos, vendian fauna, earliest skeletal fossils).
5) Biomineralization and origin of shells and skeletons.
6) Evolutionary faunas and massive extincition.
7) Palaeoecology and reconstruction of marine ecosystems.
8) Evolution of marine planctonic communities. Evolution of reefs. Palaeobiogeography.
9) Systematic review of fossil plants with respect to territory of the Czech Republic.
10) Systematic review of fossil invertebrates with respect to territory of the Czech Republic
(trilobites, graptolites, microfossils).
11) Systematic review of fossil invertebrates with respect to territory of the Czech Republic
(brachiopods, bryozoans).
12) Systematic review of fossil invertebrates with respect to territory of the Czech Republic
(echinoderms, cnidarians).
13) Systematic review of fossil invertebrates with respect to territory of the Czech Republic
(molluscs).
14) Systematic review of fossil invertebrates with respect to territory of the Czech Republic
(small invertebrate groups, ichnofossils).

Knowledge - students are expected to possess the following knowledge before the course commences to finish it successfully: |
know plant and animal systems in secondary school level |
know chronostratigraphy of the geological history, palaeogeography of paleocontinents, massive extinctions and climatic changes and their causes |
know laws, principes and terminology of stratigraphy |
know geological history (environment, rocks, fossils) on territory of the Czech Republic |
Skills - students are expected to possess the following skills before the course commences to finish it successfully: |
use the appropriate scientific terminology in description of organism and geological processes |
use critically use the internet databases, especially Wikipedia, also in English language |
be able to critically study the Czech and foreign textbooks |
