Course objectives:
|
The aim of the course is to introduce and classify political actors in democratic political systems. The course is thematically divided into two main parts: the first part is focused on interest groups and social movements, the second part deals with the phenomena of political parties and party systems. Basic categorization of political actors and the most important definitions of the different types of political actors will be mentioned at the beginning of the course. Subsequently, the role and functions of interest groups and social movements, the most common typology of interest groups and social movements and two model systems of interest intermediation (pluralism and neo-corporativism) will be described. Within the part of the course devoted to political parties, the debate on the definition and functions of political parties will be presented first, and then the most important classification and typology of political parties will be introduced. In the final part of the course the possibilities and limits of typology of party systems will be discussed. The seminars will be focused on current trends in political party and civil society developments in European democracies.
