Course objectives:
|
Introduce basic methods and methodology, including statistical and graphical, in various stages of socio-economic research in geography. Explain the basic criteria of successful socio-economic research - formulating a plan of research, working with literature and data sources, selection of the appropriate objectives and methods of research work, evaluation, ethics in research work, the research results presentation, content and form of research reports.

Requirements on student
|
Preparation of a seminar paper on the assigned topic with respect to the formal requirements for a research report (for the first part of the course, with the possibility of using the knowledge from both parts), completion of the accompanying e-learning course and its final test, completion of the test for the second part of the course.

Content
|
Lecture topics:
The basics of scientific methodology, focusing on socio-economic geography, socio-economic status of geography in the system of geographical sciences, geographic thinking, types of research.
Geographical research in socio-economic environment of the object and subject of interest, research plan, basic research stages, the credibility of the research.
Basic methods in socio-economic research in geography - classification of methods, methods of obtaining and organizing data, data sources.
Basic methods in socio-economic research in geography - data evaluation (geographical analysis and synthesis).
Geographical dimension, classification, typification, regionalisation in socio-economic geography.
Geographical thinking, epistemology, development, theoretical background
Presentation of socio-economic research results - content and formal requirements of presentation, ethics of scientific work.
Region, municipality, factory as an object of interest in socio-economic research.
Data - types of data, sources of data, basic methods of quantitative description of reality - descriptive analysis.
Analysis of dependencies - correlation, regression.
Comparative analysis - analysis of variance, comparison of two or more sets.
Time series analysis (index analysis).
Factor analysis, cluster analysis.
Exercise (seminar) topics:
Seminar assignment, content, formal requirements, organisation of work in seminars (excersises).
Examples of elaboration of a research report, preparing a project application.
Object and subject of research interest, formulation of research questions and hypotheses, research plan according to the seminar paper assignment.
Sources of statistical data, methods of obtaining and organizing data.
Preparation of questionnaire survey, content and structure of questions, selection of respondents.
Geographical analysis and synthesis, dimensions, classification, typification, regionalisation in socio-economic geography, examples of use in Czech geography.
Content, formal requirements of research presentation, ethics of scientific work, selected advice on approach to research and scientific work; discussion of seminary theses.
Discussion of the processing of seminar papers; examples of the processing of selected regions (municipalities, factories) within the framework of socio-economic research, examples of processed research topics within geographic departments in Czechia, information on the choice of the topic of the bachelor thesis.
Data - types of data, sources of data, basic methods of quantitative description of reality - descriptive analysis.
