Porušení neutrality Belgie německými vojsky dokázalo dostatečně znepokojit britskou veřejnost i sjednotit liberální kabinet v rozhodnutí vyhlásit válečný stav.

This bachelor thesis focuses on the topic of British war intervention during the World War I. The main goal of the thesis is to determine what were the reasons that made the British government agree to join the war on the side of France and Russia. To find out why did they made such a decision, we need to know how were the relations between states changing at the turn of the 19th and 20th century. The official cause of British intervention was the violation of Belgian neutrality by Wilhelmine Germany, but this statement is questionable, because there can be found more possible reasons to clarify the British declaration of war against Germany.
The main source for the analysis of this problematics is a book written by John J. Mearsheimer, The Tragedy of Great Power Politics. The book provides us with an offensive realism paradigm which is based on the power politics and calculation of power that helps us to better understand and realize the effects of distribution of power. Mearsheimer also describes the model of offshore balancer which is a state with much larger power than the rival states do have, but this state is separated by a water barrier that makes it unable to create its hegemony, so it is natural for the state to secure the balance of power, so no one can reach the hegemony. This concept is well-applicable for the United Kingdom in the middle of 19th century and we can recognize how the shift of power distribution changed Britain's behavior in the international system.
The first chapter of the practical part of the thesis shows how the unification of Germany and changes of economic power related to it made British leaders behave differently than they used to behave in the era of "splendid isolation". The following chapter describes the colonial competition between states. We can observe how Germany became an enemy of United Kingdom when it had begun to be an aggressive rival to British naval dominance. There are described many mistakes made by German leaders that led to some international crisis and anglo-german antagonism. Last Chapter provides an insight to how the British cabinet dealt with the war declaration decision-making. The liberal cabinet was a few times close to falling apart, but the violation of Belgian sovereignty helped to persuade the public opinion alongside with the undecided members of the cabinet, that it is right to intervene. United Kingdom would most likely join the war anyhow, because the coalition of conservatives and unionists, according to a letter written by Bonar Law to Asquith, would join the war immediately after their takeover of the cabinet.
