Course content
Basic terminology and specific approaches of English stylistics in comparison with Czech stylistics, description of functional styles with the exception of the style of fiction, identification of language means and structure of individual stylistic varieties, description of socially and regionally determined variants of English, a survey of differences of British and American English including pronunciation, grammar and lexis, work with authentic documents of various genres.

  • Preparation for formative assessments (2-20) - 6 hours per semester

understand the basic phenomena in the area of English phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, lexicology and lexicography
learning outcomes
Students are able to - use linguistic terminology in the area of stylistics appropriately, - apply the principles of identification of a functional style as well as a particular stylistic variety while working with an authentic text, - identify various language means used both in a spontaneous and systematically created language utterance, - identify regional variants of English from the point of view of their pronunciation and grammatical and lexical peculiarities, - apply the knowledge of principles of individual functional style in independent creation of selected stylistic varieties.
- describe and explain the aims of stylistics and its approaches to the work with language varieties
- describe stylistically diverse language means used in communication in terms of various functional style
- describe the basic features of regional and social variants of English in the area of pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar
