Course objectives:
|
The goal of the course is to apprize students with the Early Modern period in the Czech Lands, defined by years 1526-1792. The emphasis is on political, religious, economic, social and cultural development of the Czech Lands in the form of theme-oriented blocks in which emphasizes the effect of the phenomenon across all social classes of the population in the Czech Lands.

Content
|
1. Definition of terms, periodization (long Middle Ages, etc.), editions of historical sources, outline about literature and magazines on the theme of Early Modern period, main centers of research 2. Estatism and absolutism, internal political development of the Habsburg Monarchy, nobility in the Czech Lands in the 16th-18 th Century (political aspirations, lifestyle, specific value hierarchy) 3. The Habsburg monarchy as a geopolitical phenomenon of the Early Modern period, context of foreign policy and its changes (relations with other European lands, the Habsburg-Turkish wars, etc.). 4. Confessional situation in the Czech Lands, the effects of the European reformation, recatholisation (confessionalization), the question of conversions, Baroque devoutness, the problem of minorities (Jews, Baptists), the significance of the Enlightenment reforms in this sphere 5. Royal and aristocratic courts as a cultural, artistic and intellectual center (Rudolfine circuit, "Czech" Renaissance, "Czech" Baroque, the question of patronage, collecting, the position of the artist in society) 6. Key conflicts of the Eraly Modern period and their impact on the Czech Lands (territorial changes, demographic trends, economic aftermath, changes in mentality and values hierarchy, etc.). 7. Transformation of family structures during the Early Modern period (demographic trends, relationship to children and conception of education, the legal and social status of women) 8. Protoindustrialization and urbanization of the Czech Lands, changes in their social structure, main economic theories (mercantilism, physiocracy) 9. The economic and social situation of the peasant population (feudal dependence and its consequences, conditions, etc.). 10. Reflection of the Early Modern period in the historiography, Habsburg and Habsburg-Lorraine Dynasty in Czech and European historiography, historical actualizations (White Mountains theme, the theme of exile, etc.).
