Course objectives:
|
To introduce students to the problems of syntagmatic relations at the level of words and sentences and explain the various concepts of syntax. To teach them how to understand the difference between formal and semantic syntactic relations as well as the formal means of their expression. To show the basic differences in the syntactic description of the language with regards to the analytic syntax (sentence elements) and valence syntax (sentence structures). To make students aware of the base of linguistic style as the integration principle of the text-building.

Syntax:
Preparation of a seminar paper of an analytical nature. Successful writing of three credit tests on syntax. Combined exam.
Stylistics:
Successful writing of the credit test in stylistics.

Content
|
Lectures: 1. Introduction to the contents of the subject, recommended literature, syntax as the science about textual units. 2. Sentence - clause, these concepts in modern syntax - the types of sentences according to the attitude of speakers. 3. Syntactic relations, the ways and means of their expression (predication, determination, co-ordination, apposition). 4. Irregularities of sentence structures. 5. Basic sentence elements and their expression. 6. Attribute, verbal attribute. 7. Classification of sentence patterns. 8. Sentence pattern with respect to the criteria of valence syntax. 9. Sentence pattern with respect to the criteria of valence syntax. 10. Understandable characteristics of the most important functional styles (scientific, administrative, journalistic, literary, and the style of everyday speech) 11. Objective and subjective stylistics factors. Spheres of style and stylistic levels. 12. Stylistics and textual syntax. composition of the text, stylistic procedures and forms. 13. Composition of the text, stylistic procedures and forms.
