Chudoba patří mezi největší problémy současného světa. První vědecké definice chudoby můžeme nalézt na konci devatenáctého století. Ale většina definic, které dnes využíváme, vznikla ve dvacátém a jedenadvacátém století. V současné době existuje mnoho koncepcí chudoby. Vybrala jsem několik definic k hlubšímu prozkoumání. Například teorii možností Amartyi Sena, primární a sekundární chudobu od Rowntreeho nebo kulturu chudoby O. Lewise. Ve své práci jsem popsala různá měřítka chudoby jako Index lidského rozvoje, hranici extrémní chudoby, hranici chudoby v České republice atd. Soustředila jsem se na koncepci urbánní chudoby. Urbánní chudoba poukazuje na zvláštní typ chudoby ve městech, především v rozvojových zemích. Urbánní chudoba zahrnuje kombinaci mnoha faktorů. Například chabou konstrukce obydlí, neformální osídlení, špatnou úroveň sanitačních opatření a kriminalitu. Pokusila jsem se prozkoumat urbánní chudobu v zemích Východoafrického společenství (EAC) ? v Keni, Tanzanii, Ugandě, Rwandě, a Burundi Znalosti načerpané při tvorbě své práce jsem využila pro přípravu dvou vyučovacích hodin na téma chudoba. Výuka proběhla na gymnáziu

Poverty is one of the biggest problems in our contemporary world. At the end of 19th we can find first scientific definitions of poverty. Most of definitions we use today emerged in 20th and 21st century. There are many conceptions of poverty today. I have chosen a few definitions to explore. For example theory of capabilities by Amartya Sen, primary and secondary poverty by Rowntree or the culture of poverty by O. Lewis. In my thesis, I described measures of poverty, such as Human Development Index, extreme poverty line, legal poverty line in the Czech Republic etc. I focused on the conception of urban poverty. Urban poverty points at special poverty in cities, especially in underdeveloped countries. Urban poverty includes a combination of many factors. These factors are for example poor construction of houses, informal settlement, poor sanitation, crime. I tried to explore urban poverty in countries of East African Community (EAC) - Kenya, Tamzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi. Then, I used knowledge gained from my thesis to preparation of two lessons about poverty. These lessons were taught at a grammar school.
