Canada has built a reputation of a middle power. Current Prime Minister Harper distances Canada from its traditional role and seeks a new position on the international stage. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to demonstrate that Canada still acts as a middle power even though Harper asserts the opposite. The research is carried out on the case of the dispute over the Arctic. The first part of the thesis defines main features of middlepowermanship. Canada is an exceptional middle power so the emphasis is placed on development of the term from the perspective of the examined country. The second part of the thesis is focused on activities of the current government in the Arctic. The thesis focuses on the position proclaimed by Harper at the beginning of his administration and discovers what Stephen Harper managed to realize and what he moderated. Then the thesis gives attention to the Canada?s expected influence on the Arctic Council.
