Research Plan
Bruce Springsteen (born 1948) is one of the best-known American rock musicians. His music has inspired generations for more than four decades, and, along with Bob Dylan, is often referred to as one of the most influential contemporary artists. Bruce Springsteen draws his inspiration from common life such as the struggles of the working-class, feelings of despair, or simply losing the American dream. Expressing American culture and yet being able to communicate with the rest of the world too, made him one of the most valuable American artists. The aim of my thesis is to explore the driving forces in his music such as how exactly he was influenced by American roots music. Bruce Springsteen sampled some of Alan Lomax's ethnographic recordings which make an interesting link between his music and music produced by ordinary people. I want to introduce the inspiration in broader sense as well, for example how it is mirrored in his approach to his audience or how it reflects a message transmitted by folk songs. The purpose of my thesis will be to link Springsteen's music to traditional songs by comparing their themes. My work will try to explore Springsteen's influences and the main elements that made him interested in following roots music traditions on his recordings as well as his stage persona.
