This diploma thesis is concerned with US argumentation in foreign military interventions abroad. The main aim is to analyze speeches of key political leaders before UN and NATO as well as on domestic level and I attempt to discover whether US use universal form of convincing rhetoric or the argumentation is made ad-hoc for each intervention. The focus here is on five military interventions: Iraq (1991), Somalia (1992), Afghanistan (2001), Iraq (2003) and Libya (2011).
First part deals with theoretical concepts essential to understaing of argumentation and why we might consider it valuable for scientific research - this includes concept of identity and construction of enemy. These constitute my theoretical framework through which I try to explain why the argumentation is the way it is.
Second part is dedicated to the US argumentation in each of the interventions. I analyze proclamatory motivations before UN and NATO (when considered relevant) as well as domestic speeches. The focus is on key political leaders such as the president, vice president, secretary of defense, secretary of state, national security advisor, US representative to UN and so on.
