Bakalářská práce se zabývá Apalačským regionem a literaturou. První část práce se zaměří na geografii regionu, která je velmi rozmanitá a plná kontradikcí. Tato horská krajina dokáže být krásná, ale na druhou stranu velmi drsná a nepředvídatelná. Dále se zaměří na obyvatele regionu, kteří jsou známí svou izolovaností od zbytku Spojených států, ale také svým silným poutem k rodině a komunitě, ve které žijí. Tito lidé si velice váží regionálního kulturního dědictví, tradic a přírody. Dokážou být ale také velmi konzervativní. Obyvatelé to ale ne vždy měli lehké. Region často sužovala chudoba, nezaměstnanost, nedostatek vzdělání či špatný zdravotní stav. Velkým zásahem do regionu byla bezesporu modernizace těžebního průmyslu, jelikož Apalačský region byl vždy spíše venkovského rázu a těžební a zemědělský průmysl byl pro velkou část obyvatel hlavním zdrojem peněz.
Druhý oddíl se bude věnovat apalačské literatuře. Apalačská literatura kopíruje geografii regionu, která dokáže být velmi romantická, ale také tajemná, temná a krutá. Jelikož byl Apalačský region po dlouhou dobu izolovaný, podléhal ze strany zbylých Spojených států stereotypům. Tak tomu bylo i s literaturou. Tato část se také zaměří na tradici mluveného slova či rozdělní apalačské literatury. Nakonec se druhá část bude věnovat knize Red Holler: Contemporary Appalachian Literature, ze které jsou rovněž vybrány tři povídky určené k analýze v praktické části práce. Také dojde ke krátkému představení tří spisovatelů - Rona Rashe, Alexe Taylora a Charlese Dodda Whita, kteří jsou autory analyzovaných krátkých povídek.
Třetí, praktický oddíl se soustředí na analýzu tří vybraných krátkých povídek. Jedná se o povídky, které jsou zasazené do Apalačského regionu, takže je možné v nich nalézt prvky typické pro tento region. Poslední část práce bude zakončena krátkým shrnutím všech tří povídek a výčtem společných prvků a témat.

The thesis Depiction of Appalachian Region in Contemporary American Literature - A Study of Chosen Authors is about Appalachian region and its literature. The thesis is divided into three bigger parts. First and second part is theoretical. The first part deals with description of Appalachian region, its geography, people, culture, or poverty and healthcare of the region. Because of the practical part and for better understanding, the second part deals with description of Appalachian literature. This part is concerned with regional' dialect, tradition of spoken word or division of Appalachian literature. Second part also deals with the book Red Holler: Contemporary Appalachian Literature by John Brascum and Wayne Thomas. It is a collection of fiction, nonfiction, poetry and graphic narratives, written by contemporary Appalachian writers. This part also includes information about chosen authors. First, and most famous, is Ron Rash, second is Alex Taylor and third is Charles Dodd White. The third part of the thesis is practical and it contains an analysis of three short stories written by authors that were mentioned. This part is focused on searching for elements which are typical for this region and proving similarities in these three short stories.

Bakalářská práce se zabývá Apalačským regionem a literaturou. První část práce se zaměří na geografii regionu, která je velmi rozmanitá a plná kontradikcí.
