Course objectives:
|
The aim of the course is to acquaint the students with the development of modern social and political thought through reading and discussion of classical texts in the social sciences. The course will focus on the reading and contextual analysis of the most important works of social and political theory from the beginnings of modernity to the first decades of the 20th century. Authors of the readings include Niccoló Machiavelli, Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Charles Louis Montesquieu, Adam Smith, Karl Marx, and Max Weber.

Requirements on student
|
Knowledge of topics covered in lectures and assigned readings is required. Students regularly read assigned texts in Czech and foreign languages and prepare assignments on a regular basis. The assignments are in the form of oral presentations or texts; this will be arranged by mutual agreement between lecturer and students. Assignments will be evaluated by lecturer. Presentation generally lasts about 10-20 minutes, standard length of papers is 10-20 standard pages (1800 characters with spaces per page).
The final exam will be in oral form.
