Course objectives:
|
The introductory lecture will examine the "new media" phenomenon. The course will then present the origins of transition to digital media and related theories as Vannevar Bush's hypertext theory and Marshal MacLuhan´s concept of global village. This part of the course will focus on ARPANET network, the predecessor of today's internet. The course will then examine the growing number of PC users in the 1980s and the mass expansion of the Internet in the following decade. In its next part, the course will focus on the continuing revolution in digital media and the rapid evolution of web 2.0 phenomenon with users creating content by their own (youtube, wikipedia)
The final and most important part will analyze local, regional and global digital media and their impact on social and political events, warfare etc. It will present websites of politicians, political parties and organizations and terrorist and extremist groups. The course will look at blogs dealing with political themes, potential political influence of social networks (mySpace.com) etc.

Requirements on student
|
Students regularly read assigned texts in Czech and foreign languages and prepare assignments on a regular basis. The assignments are in the form of oral presentations or texts; this will be arranged by mutual agreement between lecturer and students. Assignments will be evaluated by lecturer.
Presentation generally lasts about 10-20 minutes, standard length of papers is 10-20 standard pages (1800 characters with spaces per page).
