Od konce studené války zůstává charakter bezpečnostního prostředí sporný. Za těchto okolností prezentují Buzan a Waever svou teorii regionálních bezpečnostních komplexů, ve které tvrdí, že se regionální bezpečnostní dynamika stala dominantním aspektem nového globálního pořádku. Teorie regionálních bezpečnostních komplexů argumentuje, že geograficky blízké státy se sdružují do celků - bezpečnostních komplexů, v rámci kterých je bezpečnost jednoho státu natolik propojena s bezpečností státu druhého, že je nelze zkoumat odděleně.
Předložená práce využívá výše zmíněnou teorii jako analytický rámec. Za pomoci geografického vymezení středoafrického regionálního bezpečnostního komplexu z roku 2003, který je definován jako skupina států složená z Demokratické republiky Kongo, Ugandy, Rwandy a Burundi, je vystavěna případová studie bezpečnostní dynamiky v regionu afrických Velkých jezer s ohledem na vybrané události historického, politického a společenského vývoje od vzniku vybraných územních celků až do současnosti. Hlavním cílem předkládané práce je proto zodpovědět otázku, zda prostorová definice středoafrického regionálního bezpečnostního komplexu odráží současný stav tohoto afrického regionu či nikoliv. V ideálním případě, v závislosti na dosažených závěrech, by tato práce mohla sloužit jako podnět pro aktualizaci Buzanovy a Waeverovy teorie tak, aby lépe odpovídala současným požadavkům mezinárodních vztahů.

Since the end of Cold War, the nature of the security environment remains disputed. Under these circumstances, Buzan and Waever present their theory of regional security complexes, which argues that regional security dynamics have become dominant in the new global order. The theory of regional security complexes is thus centred around this argument and says that states are clustered in clusters security complexes where the security of one is linked with the security of the others.
The presented thesis uses the above-mentioned theory as an analytical frame. Using the spatial definition from 2003, which describes the Central African RSC as a cluster of states comprising of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi, this thesis present a case study of the African Great Lakes Region security dynamics by exploring the historical, political and societal development of each state and their relations within the region. Going beyond 2003 and following the development up until current state of affairs, the main aim of the presented thesis is to answer the question of temporal relevance of the spatial definition of the Central African Regional Security Complex within current international system. Ideally, and based on the conclusion reached, this thesis might then serve as an impetus for updating Buzan´s and Waever´s theory in order to reflect the current state of affairs in the region and within the African continent as a whole.
