Annotation in English The aim of this Thesis was to find the reasons that led to the peaceful division of Czechoslovakia and to explain the events leading to the split, as well as identify the crucial factors that caused it. In the theoretical part of my thesis, I tried to find fault points that ultimately led to division. In addition, I tried to point out the most important actors who contributed to the dissolution and to find the reasons that motivated their actions. My main aim was to answer the question: "What are the key factors underlying the peaceful division of Czechoslovakia?" As far as the theoretical framework is concerned, this Thesis works with the securitization theory of the Copenhagen school. The securitization concept developed by the Copenhagen school assumes that securitization involves the process of introducing a security issue as an existential threat, and that the way to study securitization lies in the study of discourses and political constellations by analyzing when the claim with a special rhetorical and semiotic structure achieves sufficient effect, so that the audience tolerates violations of rules that would otherwise be respected. Applying this theoretical concept to the case of the Czechoslovak division has led to the conclusion that the Czech and Slovak political elites securitized issues of sovereignty and identity and shifted matters beyond the standards of regular politics. Finally, the elites divided the Czechoslovak state far from the public eye and behind the closed doors without giving the possibility of a referendum to the Czechoslovak citizens. The Czechoslovak citizens tolerated this violation of rules and successfully completed the securitization process. However, I argue that the process of desecuritization and the fact that the future of the common state was decided among the elites possibly contributed to the peaceful character of the Czechoslovak split.
